A member of my family , a close cousin, who suffers from a severe mental illness was very badly and unjustly treated by two officers from The Prescott Valley police department recently. My cousin called the police department for help because he percieved through the eyes of his illness that he was being followed /attacked and needed help to get to safety. He needed urgent pyschiatric care .He had been missing from home for over a month and his family were suffering horribly not knowing where he was or if he was even alive. Instead of assisting him to get the correct medical treatment instead he was arrested, illegally searched , given a ticket and thrown in jail where he stayed for a week until his court date without medication. I feel its very sad sad day when police officers take advantage of the most vunerable members of our society and criminalise them to meet their career / booking quota's as opposed to doing the right thing and assisting them to get proper medical treatment. I realise that not all police are trained to identify the symptoms of SMI but it is clearly identifiable when they are directly called for help and can see no evidence of anyone trying to attack.What happened to my cousin is regrettable and demonstrates a lack of care and integrity .Its very wrong that this type of behaviour by police officers exists today.Police officers should recognise and protect all people including those who are unable to defend themselves due to illness .
I want to say thank you to the people who helped me resolve the issue of the death of Michael Earl Weatherly. If it hadn't been for their concern for the truth the issue would have just been swept under the carpet, like all issues are in the Reno-Sparks area. I pray that everyone of our police officers in Reno and Sparks are replaced by men like Detective Field. Thank you, too, Ambri and officer Scarborough (I hope I have the spellings correct). What you did matters.
I know the PVPD they are committed to excellence and are one of the finest police departments in the state.
